Located in central Italy in the green hills of Umbria, just outside Citta di Castello, Pompeo B & B overlooks the tranquil Italian countryside of the upper Tiber River Valley. The splendid hilltop position of this country B & B affords panoramic views extending from Umbertide in the south to the Apennine Mountains in the north.
In 2003 Italian-Americans Rino and Valerie Zanotto began restoration of this centuries old stone farmhouse constructed around a 12th century look-out tower. It is one in a series of three towers that guarded the valley during the turbulent reign of the Bourbon del Monte family. Today the valley enjoys much more tranquillity and even forms part of a hunting reserve, thus fascinating wild creatures (including wild boar, pheasants and hare) may be sighted during your stay. Restoration was completed in 2007. Rino and Valerie are proud of their charming property and enjoy sharing it with their guests along with valuable tips for exploring the uniqueness of the area. Day trips are easily made to the little-known hilltowns nearby as well as the more familiar destinations of Florence, Assisi, Cortona, Gubbio, Orvieto and Arezzo. Other activities available include hiking, biking, horseback riding, tennis, thermal baths, classes in yoga, cooking, painting, wine tasting, music events, local festivals and shopping
just to name a few.
Pompeo B & B is the ideal location for family and friends to gather for relaxing strolls through nearby olive groves and vineyards or for serious hiking or bicycling up to Monte Santa Maria Tiberina where you will enter through a Medieval arch into the piazza and a spectacular panorama of the entire valley. A less strenuous walk is into the village of Gioello
a jewel. Guests can also watch the neighboring farmer make sausage by hand in the traditional way as well as the curing of prociutto ham, a typical Umbrian art from Norcia
or maybe try your luck at truffle or mushroom hunting! The historic center of Citta di Castello is less than 15 minutes by car. Rich in art and culture, the town also boasts great restaurants featuring local truffle, porcini and wild boar dishes. Shoppers will love Thursday and Saturday market days and the fine specialty shops with local hand painted ceramics, murano glass and designer clothing. (Not to be missed is the little truffle shop in a cobbled side street just down from the Duomo.)
The three bedrooms of Pompeo B & B are situated on the ground floor each with independent entrances and patios which allows guests to escape to peaceful spaces for reading, relaxing and dining al fresco while enjoying the views. The rooms are inter-connected for guests travelling together or the doors can be separately locked. Fresh seasonal fruit and a bottle of wine await your arrival and the kitchens are thoughtfully stocked with essentials. With wide stone walls and a hilltop breeze the rooms stay delightfully cool in summer and with central heating warm and cozy in winter.
A wonderful continental breakfast is provided each morning by Valerie including warmed pastries from the local bakery and you can count on Rino for a glass of quality prosecco around aperitivo hour! For guests who wish to relax completely, Rino and Valerie can provide anything from a tasty starter followed by a simple pasta to a four course meal from 20 euros p/p including local wine (24 hour notice appreciated).
